Installation Step Box Sync For Mac
- Download the Box Sync Installer DMG file.
- Open the DMG file when the download is complete.
- Drag the Box Sync app icon into your Applications folder.
- Double-click on Box Sync in your Applications folder.
Your synced files are stored in a new folder called Box Sync. You can access this folder from the Favorites section in the left pane of your Finder window.

How does it work?
In order to work with the program from multiple locations, you will need to have installed on all those computers. This way, the data you store in one location becomes available on all others, provided that the ‘Sync’ function is activated.
Aside from being able to work with the documents stored in the shared folder and edit their contents, the tool also enables you to create a link which can be sent to colleagues or friends, so as to permit them to view or download the file on any web browser, regardless of the fact that they may or may not have an account on Box Sync for Mac.
However, the program does not support multiple usernames connecting to it simultaneously, meaning you need to logout and back in, if you want to access information from a different account. Similarly, it does not feature the ability for users to share data between themselves or send files to each other, privately.
How to use it?
Control the content you that is synced to your local Box Sync folder by marking content in your Box.com account. A folder that is marked for Sync displays a blue checkmark icon beside its name.
To mark a folder for Sync, navigate to your Box.com account and follow the steps below.
- Select a folder by clicking beside its name, or click the folder name to open the folder. The right-hand sidebar should display information about the folder you’ve selected or opened.
- Click Details in the sidebar.
- Click the Sync to Desktopslider to mark this folder for sync. By default, this will mark all contained folders for sync as well. You can unmark specific subfolders within a synced folder if you only want certain content to be synced.
Adding files and folders to the folder on your computer will automatically upload them to your account on Box.com and mark them for Sync.
When a parent folder is partially synced (hovering over folder icon displays the This item is partially synced status), new subfolders or files created within this parent folder will not be marked for Sync automatically. To fully sync a partially synced folder, you must unsync the partially synced folder, then sync it again.
Viewing All Synced Items
You can view a list of all items marked for sync on the Synced page. Click Synced in the left-hand sidebar.
Syncing Subfolders
The subfolder sync feature in Box Sync 4.0 allows you to selectively sync or unsync any subfolder in Box.
Using Subfolder Sync
- Identify a directory structure in the Box website where nothing is synced.
- In your Box website account, select the folder and mark it for sync. Verify the corresponding sync status in your Box Sync directory on your computer.
- Within the folder, you can decide to only sync the one subfolder and unsync the other subfolders. Simply select the subfolder you’d like to unsync and ensure that the Sync to Desktop slider is disabled.
Notes:
- You cannot unsync individual files within a synced folder. If you sync a folder to your desktop, all individual files contained will be synced as well.
- If you mark a subfolder for sync, its parent folder will be marked for sync as well, meaning that the individual files in that parent folder will be synced to your desktop in addition to the marked subfolder. No unmarked subfolders contained by the parent folder will be synced.
- Any subfolder created in a parent folder that is partially synced will not be synced by default. New folders created in that same directory on Box to be unmarked for Sync by default.
Deployment differs based on the bootstrapper installation. View the /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/ directory to check if the com.box.sync.bootstrapper is installed.
If the bootstrapper is already installed in the user’s system, the user can download and run the Box Sync DMG file at a later time without requiring administrator access.
If the bootstrapper is not installed in the user’s system, follow this process:
- Copy the application bundle to the desired install location on the user’s machine.
- Copy the bootstrapper from the application bundle to /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/.
